What is counseling?
Counseling is a health service that may increase well-being, alleviate stress, resolve problems and improve functioning on a day to day basis. Counselors often help with depression, anxiety, ADHD, divorce, grief and loss, self-esteem, communication and other issues.
Counselors are trained professionals that engage in evidence based modalities to treat mental health issues. Examples of counseling modalities include child centered play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy and mindfulness. Counselors engage clients in individual, group, marital and family therapy. They serve persons of all cultures and ages in a variety of settings including school, work, institutions and communities.
What is Play Therapy?
Mental health is an essential part of a child’s health. Mental health is interconnected to a child’s ability to perform in society, at home and school. A child may be going through problems like bullying, losing someone they loved, academic problems, family problems, trauma and other issues. Play therapy is a form of therapy used for children to communicate.
Play therapists are trained professionals that assist children with the expression of feelings and needs through play. They teach children how to cope with problems in healthier ways. A RPT, Registered Play Therapist, has a Master’s degree, license to counsel, additional play therapy coursework and supervision. A RPT is accredited with the Association for Play Therapy, the national accreditation agency for play therapists. Play therapists serve in a variety of settings including school, institutions and communities.
